Flashcards do conjunto (10)
- 1Network Layer- Responsible for IP addressing
- Packetisation and End-to-End routing
through network
Examples: IPv4/6, AppleTalk, IPX - 2IPv4- Connectionless
- No setup/teardown like TCP
- Best effort protocol like UDP
Mediums: Copper, fiber & air - 3Dynamic IP vs Static IPD:
- Automatically assigned by DHCP
S:
- Used for "shared" devices such as printers, routers & servers - 4IP Protocol Header (6)1. Version (IPv4/6)
2. Service type: Quality of Service or not
3. *TTL: # of hops before being dropped
4. Next Protocol: What to expect next layer
5. Checksum: Corrupted packet detection
6. Source/Destination addresses
*Time to Live (of packet) - 5Hierarchical IP Addressing- Made of several layers
- Based around subnetworks (groups of IP addresses)
- Subnet Mask: Provides hierarchy (divides into network & host) - 6How does the OS figure out network address from subnet mask?- Utilises logical AND operations
- 7Packet Forwarding Steps1. Sender checks if host is in own subnet
2. If: In subnet, sends to MAC address of receiver, else: forwarded to *router
*Default gateway - 8What do routers do in subnets? Why?- Forward in "general direction"
- Reduces performance overheads from excessive broadcasts
- Diff. security policies can be applied to subnets - 9Loopback Addresses- Used for testing, sending data to self efficiently
- Not routed through internet
- 127.0.0.0 - 127.255.255.255 - 10—Unicast: Packets sent to one host
Multicast: Packets sent to group of hosts
Broadcast: Sent to all hosts within source host subnet. Propagated via network switches.
