Flashcards
DNA and genetics

Flashcards do conjunto (17)
- 1What does DNA stand for?Deoxyribonucleic Acid

- 2What is DNA?DNA, or Deoxyribonucleic Acid, is the heredity material in humans and almost all organisms.
- 3What four bases are found in DNA?. Adenine
. Thymine
. Guanine
. Cytosine - 4what is the Watson-Crick model?Watson-Crick Structure of DNA. Deoxyribonucleic Acid (DNA) is a double-stranded, helical molecule. It consists of two sugar-phosphate backbones on the outside, held together by hydrogen bonds between pairs of nitrogenous bases on the inside.
- 5How many parts do Nucleotide molecules have?they have three parts which are -
- Phosphate group
- Deoxyribose sugar
- One of the four nitrogen-rich bases - 6What are chromosomes ?a thread-like structure of nucleic acids and protein found in the nucleus of most living cells, carrying genetic information in the form of genes.
- 7what do chromosomes consist of?Chromosomes are made up of DNA and protein. The proteins are histones, and the DNA is wrapped around the histones.
- 8How many chromosomes are in your body cells ?In humans, each cell normally contains 23 pairs of chromosomes, for a total of 46.
- 9What are Gametes?Gametes are Eggs and sperm
- 10What chromosome determines whether you are a female or male ?In Females the sex chromosome is XX
In Males the sex chromosome is XY - 11What are Autosomes?Any chromosome that is not a sex chromosome.
- 12What are Homologous Chromosomes? One chromosome of each homologous pair comes from the mother (called a maternal chromosome) and one comes from the father (paternal chromsosome)
- 13Where is the DNA found in Plants? In plants the DNA is found in the Chlorplasts.
- 14What are Genes?a unit of heredity which is transferred from a parent to offspring and is held to determine some characteristic of the offspring.
- 15Where is DNA found in an organism? In organisms called eukaryotes, DNA is found inside a special area of the cell called the nucleus.
- 16What is the difference between one gene and the other?- Order of bases along the DNA strand
- Number of bases in that section of DNA
- 17list the proteins that our cells need to survive and function well?- structural, such as collagen found in tendons and ligaments and keratin found in skin, hair, nails.
- Regulatory, such as growth hormone which stimulates growth and cell reproduction
