Flashcards
Topic 1 ICT
Flashcards do conjunto (18)
- 1Define Data.Data is raw facts and figures that have no meaning for example 120978
- 2What is information?Information is data that has been processed by a computer. Data + meaning + context = information
- 3What is knowledge?Knowledge is derived from information by applying rules to it. Knowledge is the application of information to a situation.
- 4What is GIGO?GIGO is an abréviation for garbage in garbage out. It means if you put rubbish into the computer, you get rubbish out.
- 5What is processing?Data is processed by a computer, by preforming calculations or arranging the data into a meaningful order. An example would be working out an athletes average over 3 years.
- 6What is encoding?Encoding is assigning codes to the data reducing its size. An example would be at an airport, London Heathrow would be LHR.
- 7What are some advantages of encoding?-Takes up less storage space
-It is easily inputted. - 8What are some disadvantages of encoding?-Training is needed to understand it
-Viruses can be a problem
-The code can be easily stolen - 9What is a transcription error? It is an error made when typing a document as the source of the data. For example mishearing what a person says over the phone and entering it into the computer.
- 10What is a transposition error? It's an error made when characters are swapped around so they are in the wrong order.
- 11What is a check digit? It's a decimal number added to a number for the purpose of detecting the sorts of errors humans normally make on data entry.
- 12What is a presence check? It's used to check that data is entered into the correct fields. For example entering a username and password.
- 13What is a range check? It's a data validation technique which checks that the data input into a computer is within a certain range.
- 14What is a validation check? They are checks which a developer of a solution creates, using the software, in order to restrict the data that a user can enter, so as to reduce errors. Presence and range checks are validation check examples.
- 15What is a batch total?A meaningful total that is used to check that the computer has input all the data.
- 16What is a hash total?A hash total is a meaningless total of numbers, such as order numbers, used to check that all data has been entered.
- 17What is a parity check?A parity check is to make sure that the data sent is the same as being received when data is transmitted from one computer to another.
- 18What is verification?Checking that the data being entered into the ICT system perfectly matches the source of the data.
