Flashcards
Biology A Local Ecosystem
Flashcards do conjunto (21)
- 1CommensalismA relationship between two organisms in which one benefits and the other derives no benefit or harm (E.g. Barnacles on Whales)
- 2MutualismA relationship between two organisms which is beneficial to both (E.g. Sea Anemones and Clown Fish)
- 3ParasitismThe parasite obtains food from a living host (E.g. Ticks on Dogs)
- 4AllellopathyAn Organism which produces one or more biochemicals which influence the growth, survival and reproduction of the other (E.g. Camphor Trees drop leaves containing camphor and this prevents other plants from growing around the tree.)
- 5PredationPredator kills prey for food (Lions and Zebras)
- 6CompetitionA struggle between organisms for the same limited food supple (E.g. Lynx and Cougar both hunt the same animal)
- 7PhotosynthesisPhotosynthesis Equation
- 8ATP (Adenosine Tri Phosphate)ATP transports chemical energy within cells for metabolism.
- 9Capture Mark Recapture Formula for population
- 10Autotrophs (Self-feeder)Organisms which create their own food
- 11Heterotrophs (different feeder)Organisms which eat their food
- 12AdaptationOrganisms adopt or change characteristics through natural selection
- 13ProducerAn organism that is able to produce its own food from inorganic substances.
- 14ConsumerAn organism which gains its energy from other organisms
- 15HerbivoreOrganisms which only eat plants
- 16CarnivoreOrganisms which only eat animals
- 17OmnivoreOrganisms which eat both plants and animals
- 18ScavengerOrganisms which eat animals which other animals have already killed
- 19DetritivoreAn organism that uses organic waste as a food source, as certain insects.
- 20DecomposerAn organism, usually a bacterium or fungus, that breaks down the cells of dead plants and animals into simpler substances.
- 21Nitrate Cycle
