Language Learning Material

Flashcards do conjunto (10)
- 1—Language Learning material is all the material that can be use to facilitate the learning process. Materials development refers to all the processes that lead to the creation of materials, a process of evaluation, adaptation, design, production, exploitation and research.

- 2—Cold War was an important event, it gave way to pay more attention to the teaching of foreign languages. Language programs began to be implemented and gave the start of the production of material.

- 3—From the 1950s until today, many thinkers have left and produced different material, under some principles (Universal & Local). Among them we have Moskowitz (1962), Bowen (1978), Breen (1980), Byrd (1995), Tomlinson (1998), Harwood (2010)

- 4—In the production of any type of material, not only the internal factors that interact are important, but also the external factors, they must also be taken into account. Teachers' and Students' needs and wants are a internal factor but the context, their environment are external.

- 5—The multicultural dimension not only gives an unmatched value to the production of material, but makes the material a rich variety product. The adaptation of cultural aspects is essential in the creation process.

- 6—All material must have an approach, being the fundamental base that will allow the development of the learning process. In the 50s behaviorism was the main approach, since then many approaches have been evolved (communicative, cultural, critical grammatical)

- 7—To adequately adapt any material, we must take into account different factors like the context, the methodologies, the students, the objectives, the target foreign language. We can modify, simplify, individualize, replace, reorder, replace, modernize and so on.

- 8—Thanks to the great advances brought by the Cold War and the evolution of humanity, we can count on the implementation of technological aids in classrooms and the production of material, however, they are only tools that help if it is used properly.

- 9—Much material has been standardized, which is not correct due to the fact that it generalizes a level for all students, without taking into account internal or external factors in the teaching of foreign language. A clear example is what CEF has done, which offers material designed as a standard of what its certification exams are.

- 10—The McDonalization effect brought the production of language teaching materials predictive, which results in this type of material being globally standardized. Many Authors compare it to a script that tells teachers what to say and students what to answer, routinized excersises, homogenizing situations, metholodogias, processes, contexts and needs.
