Physiological stress Physiological responses in the body caused by physical or psychological stress.
Allostasis Body's ability to adapt to constantly changing environments to maintain homeostasis.
Tight allostatic system One that moves from high to low levels of arousal flexibly.
Allostatic load Chronically elevated state of arousal, which damages the body caused by chronic stressors.
Stress and performance When motivated to perform well, the way your body responds can either improve or inhibit your performance.
Challenge Personal resources > situational demands.
Threat Personal resources < situational demands.
Extreme stress and memory In response to extreme stressors, the body releases cortisol.
Perceived control Belief that we can influence our environment in ways that determine whether we experience positive or negative outcomes.

Physiological thriving Positive stress - acute stressors with complete relaxation between stressors.
Physiological toughening Strong mobilization of bodily stress responses during a stressor coupled with rapid recovery after the stressor.
Exercise Exercise improves mood and reduces stress. Must be 3x a week, 20 minutes of moderate intensity.
Left prefrontal cortex asymmetry More positive emotion, high immune functioning. Monks had 7x more activity.
