How to get an NHS contract? To be listed there is a "test" that the pharmacy is deemed to be "necessary and desirable". "Control of Entry" onto the NHS Pharmaceutical List (PCT list) has been in place since 1980.
What is meant by "necessary and desirable"? Based on the needs of the PCT and the population not the desire of the pharmacist or body corporate. If pharmacy is not "necessary and desirable" the application can be refused by PCT.
What is a Pharmaceutical Needs Assessment? -a profile for existing pharmacy services and client profile -a description of patient profiles related to areas of deprivation (are pharmacies in rich/poor areas) -a comparison between the PCT population and similar areas within the UK -the views of that target population -financial considerations -views of practitioners and service providers
The Medicines Act 1968 defines: A pharmacists A pharmacy Retail Pharmacy Business Body Corporate Superintendent pharmacist
A Registered Pharmacy A premises entered into the register required to be kept by the Medicines Act 1968. Register to be kept by the GPhC.
A Retail Pharmacy Business A business which can sell or supply medicines other than those on the General Sales List. (POM, P & GSL)
Body Corporate Where a retail pharmacy business is owned by a company.
What is superintendent pharmacist responsible for? Superintendent pharmacist id personally and professionally accountable for the services in a retail pharmacy business owned by a body corporate.
How many pharmacies in a multiple? 5 or more
Describe the process for adding the pharmacy onto the register. 1. Pharmacist or bodies corporate wishing to open a pharmacy need to apply to GPhC and submit their pharmacy plans. 2. GPhC inspectors inspect plans and premises. 3. If approved the pharmacy is added onto the register of premises 4. GPhC informsDH of the registration 5. Pharmacy owners pay an annual retention fee for premises.
What is supervision? Medicine may only be sold or supplied from a registered pharmacy premises by or under the supervision of a pharmacist.
