- 1What is convection?Convection only happens in LIQUIDS and GASSES. Convection happens when particles move from hotter to colder regions and carry the heat with them.
- 2Why can't convection happen happen in solids?Convection can't happen in solids because the particles can't move, only vibrate.
- 3What happens when a liquid or gas is heated up?When a liquid or gas is heated up, the particles move faster and becomes less dense.
- 4What is conduction?Conduction only happens in SOLIDS. It is the process where vibrating particles pass on kinetic energy to neighbouring particles (this causes the rise in temperature).
- 5Why are metals good conductors?Metals are good conductors as some of their electrons are free to move. Heat will make the electrons move faster and collide more frequently.
- 6What is radiation?Heat is radiated as infrared radiation and can only occur in transparent objects like air and water. All objects emit and absorb radiation constantly.
- 7What are the best absorbers and emitters?Dark colours
- 8What are the worst absorbers and emitters?Smooth, shiny and light colours (because they reflect)
