What was the age of imperialism and when did it begin? It was the age when European powers extended their control over the world. It began in the 17th century.
What is imperialism? Expansion of territory by powerful nations.
What is colonisation? Ownership of an area being taken away from indigenous people and claimed by others.
What does divide and conquer mean? The process of exploiting the pre-existing rivalries between indigenous communities.
How did Britain exploit this situation? By dealing with each group separately and one of them would usually be favoured over the other.
What are some of the reasons for imperialism? Trade and wealth Spreading gods message A civilising duty Imperial rivalry
What did Europeans hope to achieve by conquering new territories? They hoped to acquire raw materials such as silver and gold.
What was the British East India company and what did it deal in? A large business enterprise that dealt with items such as tea and opium
How did the development of steam powered battleships help the europeans? It provided them with faster transport and more accurate fire at sea
Why did the Christian Church support imperialism? They did it to convert others to Christianity
What was the White Man's Burden? The duty of white people to get others to embrace their lifestyle and culture.
What was Imperial Rivalry? The rivalry between empires to see which has more territory
What were some of the responses to European imperialism? -China's canton system - Japan's closed country system - Indian great rebellion - Boxer rebellion

What is republicanism? A form of government where a citizen is the head of the state.
What is liberalism? Movement that sought to protect the rights of man
What is capitalism? Economic system based on competition between sellers.
What is socialism? A belief where wealth is distributed fairly from the rich to the poor.
What did socialism aim to do? It aimed for equality as the belief would negate poverty as everyone would be equal
What was the bad thing about socialism? No one would put an effort on anything as they would receive the exact same rewards.
What is chartism? Belief that makes Britain more democratic
What did chartism want? Right for all men to vote The secret ballot Pay for parliamentarians Electorutes
What democratic reforms were introduced in Australia after the Eureka stockade? Full male suffrage Secret ballot Pay for parliamentarians
What is egalitarianism? Belief in a fair go for all
What is nationalism? The belief where people belong to their culture.
