Life Jackets
1. One for every passenger and crew member
2. Location must be clearly identified
3. Equipped with small CO2 bottle for inflation
4. Secondary inflation tube for increased buoyancy
5. Whistle
6. Light powered by a battery
7. Flotation cots for very young children
8. Lifed item
  1. Must be removed for servicing at certain intervals
  2. Expiry date
  3. If damaged, contaminated or out of date, must be removed
Smoke Equipment
1. Portable oxygen sets
  1. Equipped with mask
  2. Sometimes full hood
  3. Little maintenance other than inspection and checking date
Crash Axes
1. Aircraft over nine seats
2. Secured in a stowage on the flight deck
3. More than two hundred seats, second one located in the galley
First Aid Kits
1. EU OPS 1 dictates every aircraft used for passenger aircraft must have one or more first aid kits
2. 0 to 99 passengers

  1. 4
6. Must be sealed and have expiry date
7. Maintenance = check seal and expiry date
Megaphones
1. Every aircraft with sixty one or more seats must have a megaphone
2. More than one hundred seats must have two
3. Located in overhead locker dedicated to stowage
4. Routine maintenance = test megaphone and replace batteries
Emergency Escape Equipment
1. Escape Slides
  1. At each normal doorway and at emergency escape hatch
  2. Slide is mounted to the door in ordinary operation, and as door opened or closed, slide moves with it
  3. In flight, slide put into flight position and attached to door or cabin floor
  4. When initiated, compressed gas bottle will discharge and inflate
  5. In disarmed position, slide is not attached to door frame, so if door opened slide won't deploy
  6. When armed, slide engaged with floor by girt bar mechanism
    1. When opened from the inside, slide will deploy automatically
    2. Opened from the outside, slide will disarm
2. Crew Escape Facilities
  1. Basic system consists of rope attached to structure in a way that it can be dropped out the window
    1. Knots tied in it to assist descent control
  2. More sophisticated system is a wire attached to an inertia reel assembly
  3. As wire accelerates, inertia reel slows the descent so crew should reach the ground at a reasonable speed
