How does Macbeth change throughout the play ?

1. Act 1 , Scene 1

   • MB is a brave soldier as he defeated enemy and became Thane of cowdor
     • Witches predict him 'Thane of Cawdor' and he soon finds the predictions came true

2. Act 1, Scene 3

   • Macbeth has now been given predictions by the witches
     • Act 1, Scene 4 he come to know Malcolm is going to be the next king in line and Macbeth plans to kill Duncan to fulfil his ambition

3. Act 2,Scene 1

   • MB goes to kill Duncan and sees an imaginary dagger 'dagger of the mind'
     • This implies that he imagines having hold of the dagger

4. Act 3,Scene 5

   • Macbeth goes back to the witches to get a new prediction
     • Witches deceive Macbeth into believing he cant be defeated by anyone of woman

5. Act1,Scene7

   • He uses excuses that show show he really wanted the crown
     • LMB's persuasion quickly works on him
       • By the end he has taken over the plan himself he temporarily loses doubt and fear

6. Act 3 , Scene 4

   • Macbeth is filled with fear and guilt about Banquo's murder
     • He's acting like an insane person at his banquet in front of his guest and at this point we see Macbeth at his weakest point
       • LMB now has to cover for him and make the guest think he has been ill for a while
         • 'Thou cannot say I did'

7. Act5,Scene5

   • Macbeth is going to war with the group outside his castle
     • There is a loud scream and he gets the news LMB has jumped off the side of the castle he seems weary and acts strange and says a soliloquy explaining how life is short and pointless
       • His power and motivation has vanished
         • He then realises his own death is near
