Politics
- Since independence in 1960, Nigeria has progressed from civil war (1967-1970), through military dictatorship until 1998, to a stable democracy today. The country now holds regular elections, when people choose who to vote for to be their government. However, there is still conflict going on. In the north, the extremist organisation called Boko Haram wants to abolish and set up its own government under its version of the Islamic law. At least 17,000 people have been killed since 2002 and over half a million have fled the region In 2014, 276 school girls were kidnapped by Boko Haram as they oppose education for girls. The rise of Boko Haram, has been blamed on inequality. On the other hand, progress has been made in the way they dealt with the Ebola outbreak in 2014. This was the world’s worst outbreak, killing over 11,000 people. Only eight died in Nigeria, because they managed to contain the disease with good health care and planning.
