The Direct Method

1. Definition

   • Intensive oral interaction in the target language
   • Employing questions
   • Native Speaker

2. Advantage

   • Foreign language could be taught without translation
   • A foreign language could be taught without the use of the learner’s native language
   • It is conveyed directly through demonstration and action

3. Disadvantage

   • Small groups
   • It requires teachers who are native speakers or who had nativelike fluency in the foreign language
   • It is perceived to have several drawbacks
   • it lacked a rigorous basis in applied linguistic theory
   • It was largely dependent on the teacher’s skill, rather than on a textbook

4. Principles

   • Classroom instruction is conducted exclusively in the target language
   • Only everyday vocabulary and sentences are taught
   • Oral communication skills
   • Grammar is taught inductively
   • New teaching points are introduced orally
   • Concrete vocabulary is taught through demonstration, objects, and pictures
   • Both speech and listening comprehension are taught
   • Correct pronunciation and grammar are emphasized
