1. 1837-1846

   • The U.S sent in a form called of "Gun Boat Diplomacy". On 8 july 1853 Commodore Perry arrived for commercial agreements.
     • U.S Promised to return
       • In March 1854 Tokugawa Shogunate agreed to Treaty of Kanagawa which opened up two ports to U.S trade. Then the U.S got the position most favoured of all the Nations.
         • In 1858 Japan's government decided to sign the "Treaty of Amity" and commerce with the U.S but the imperial court opposed.
           • The imperial Court was dominated y nationalist who wanted continuing seclusion
             • Japan was pressured to sign similar treaties with other Nations (Western Nations)
