John Field
- In chapter 1, Thoreau criticized the men that lived through materialistic things. He also explained that materialistic things are useless and that they are just toys. John Field spends his day to day life working hard so that he could have the luxuries of life
Of course, Thoreau hates this. He states, “ ..for he was discontented and wasted his life into the bargain; and yet he had rated it as a gain in coming to America, that here you could get tea, and coffee, and meat every day” (Thoreau, 10).
Thoreau hints towards the idea that John Field’s coming to America was useless since he is not truly free.
John Field is the exact opposite of the canadian woodchopper
- thoreau also says that john field should have not come to live in america because all he does is work
