Will y Going To
Although it is true that "will" is a way of talking about the future, we actually have several futures. Today we will talk about two, which are very different. The other future, somewhat longer, is going to + infinitive. It's very important to know the difference between will and going to, and it's probably not what you think.
- Going to is used to talk about intentions and plans for the future. Thus we would say: * I’m going to make chicken for dinner.* She’s going to visit her grandmother tomorrow. * I’m going to look for a job as soon as I finish university.
- The three phrases speak of a plan. (Also note that it is necessary to use a form of the verb to be (am, is or are) before
- In the same way, we use infinitive going to + to ask about plans for the future: What are you going to do this weekend? What film are you going to see at the cinema? What are you going to buy at the supermarket?
- The three phrases speak of a plan. (Also note that it is necessary to use a form of the verb to be (am, is or are) before
- Will for future forecasts : Will is also used for forecasts (things we think will happen). Do you think it will rain tomorrow? I imagine I'll see him later. He’ll probably be there. Who do you think will win the football match?
- It is very important to use verbal tenses well. It is not enough for us to use only the present. It's hard to learn them well, but it's worth it.
- Going to is used to talk about intentions and plans for the future. Thus we would say: * I’m going to make chicken for dinner.* She’s going to visit her grandmother tomorrow. * I’m going to look for a job as soon as I finish university.
