Creating Successful Readers

1. Cultivating Curiosity

   • The teacher should model their own curiosity every day so that students feel comfortable being curious in the classroom setting.
     • Questions are essential to the learning experience and no question should go unrecognized.
       • Time to research and form questions about topics of interest should be built into the school day.

2. Increase Reading Volume

   • Increases Vocabulary
     • Improves Writing Skills
       • Builds upon background knowledge of subjects

3. Book Matching

   • Allows an increase in reading volume
     • Students are able to read books that they are interested in and not just a required text.
       • Personalized book baggies that students can take home to practice reading skills.

4. Responsive Readers

   • Students are able to connect what they read to their own lives.
     • Students are opening themselves up to a text on an emotional, social, and physical level
       • Allows for class wide discussion on how each student would respond to a text. By posing questions like "What would you do in this situation?"

5. Responsible Readers

   • Learning how to question the text.
     • Learning how to decide what is fake and real news
       • Reading responsibly allows students to defend their own thoughts and values
