Network Security Threats

1. Malware

   • Trojan
     • A type of virus that enters the computer by looking and disguising itself as a harmless program. It allows the hacker to gain access to almost all files, including personal information.
   • Spyware
     • Often in the form of a keylogger, spyware is a type of virus that tries to stay hidden in the background and record actions that the user does. Spyware is commonly used to gather passwords, but it can also be used to watch your screen, webcam, microphone and many other things
   • Adware
     • Adware is a type of virus where adverts become intrusive either on a webpage, or on a piece of software. Whilst generally the advert itself is likely harmless, the contents of it can often be malicious. Occasionally, the ad / tracker can be used maliciously though, using your hardware for crypto-mining and IP-logging
   • Worm
     • A type of virus that can spread without human intervention, via exploits in the network system. They often spread first and focus on being undetectable, and then, when they have reached the desired number of infected devices, they activate whatever attack they were planning.

2. Phishing

   • A webpage, company or software masquerading as another, generally popular one. They attempt to get you to put your password in, so that they can have access to it and your account. They may also attempt to get you to put in other personal details like Bank accounts or Credit Cards
