Paula Hammond

1. Designed polymers and nanoparticles for applications in drug delivery, wound healing, and energy and fuel cells

2. A lot of her work involves layer-by-layer (LbL) assembly, which builds films of alternating positively and negatively charged molecules

3. Developed “stealth polymers” to disguise cancer chemotherapeutics contained in nanoparticles so they can reach tumors

4. Works on ways to transport RNA into cells to increase or decrease expression of specific genes

5. Cofounded MIT’s Institute for Soldier Nanotechnology to develop nanotechnology to improve solider “protection and survivability”

   • While in this program, Hammond designed a spray that helps blood clot

6. Developed LayerForm technology to build drug delivery films with alternating drug and polymer layers

7. 2013: Co-founded a biotechnology company, LayerBio Inc., to commercialize LayerForm for regenerative medicine applications

8. 2013: One of three African American female fellows to be elected to the American Academy of Arts and Sciences
