Balanced Literacy
Read Alouds
- Students are modelled the right way to read and good strategies to use
- Allows teacher to be authentic in sharing her reading adventures and inspiring students to want to read.
- Introducing background knowledge before reading helps students from diverse backgrounds get on the same page
- Shows what good reading looks like in an authentic situation
Guided Reading
- Students practise new skills with teacher supervision
- Grouping allows for authentic interaction between students
- Allows students to be grouped based on their reading level
- Differentiated Support for all learners to create a safe learning environment
Independent Reading
- Students independently practise the skills taught in other facets of this model
- Students read books at their own interest and reading level
- Students work on specific work either by themselves or with a partner which allows for collaboration between students
- Found these Reading Strategy Cards on blog: http://tabletalkwithcandc.blogspot.ca/2013/03/reading-writing-focus-cards-guided.html. This is a great way to communicate with your students about what strategy they need to work on in an authentic written way
- Students work on strategies during this time at their own pace and grow where they need to grow
Shared Reading
- Students and teacher share a reading experience where everyone can see the book to practise strategies taught in read alouds
- Students see the real need for reading as they read with their peers
- Think-Pair-Share helps students to interact and hear other's thoughts and ideas
- Using Anchor Charts to make authentic shared writing and reading
- Reading is done communally so the students have a safe place to practise their reading skills
Supports independence in students
Teaches new strategies and concepts through gradual release of responsibility to allow students time to get concepts firmly grounded before letting them try on their own. This creates a safe learning environment
Allows for "independent exploration, peer interaction, and teacher instruction" (Literacy Rich Environment For K-6)
Word Walls allow for students to see familiar words displayed for them to use
Creates routines in the classroom that are easy for children to follow
Allows you to choose various materials for reading practise to improve engagement: Phone books, Dictionaries, Menus, recipes, labels, posters, Printed Directions, Student Work and Wall Displays ("Literacy Rich Environments" from Reading Rockets)
Students are free to move around the room in both guided reading and independent reading time allowing for students to interact with each other
A Literacy Rich Environment is a place that allows students with disabilities to participate in language activities in their daily lives to help them understand why we read and write. ("Literacy Rich Environment" Reading Rockets)
Short lessons with practise to allow students to work through the strategies in their own time
