Network-Based Storage Solutions
SAN (Storage Area Network)
- A SAN consists of interconnected hosts, switches and storage devices. The components can be connected using a variety of protocols. Fibre Channel is the original transport protocol of choice. A SAN typically uses Fibre Channel connectivity, while NAS typically ties into to the network through a standard Ethernet connection. A SAN stores data at the block level, while NAS accesses data as files.
- Data is identified using disk-blocks
- Data is managed by servers and is generally more expensive
- Protocols: SCSI, SATA
- For backups and recovery in SAN, Block by block copying technique is used.
- Provides high performance in high speed traffic systems.
- needs more time and efforts in organizing and controlling.
Network Attached Storage (NAS)
- A NAS is a computer connected to a network that provides file-based data storage services to other devices on the network. The primary strength of NAS is how simple it is to set up and deploy. NAS volumes appear to the user as network mounted volume.
- Data is identified using file names and byte offsets
- Data is managed by a head unit and is cheaper
- Protocols: File Server, CIFS
- For backups and recovery in NAS, Files are used.
- Not suitable for that environment which has high speed traffic.
- Easy to manage and provides a simple interface for organizing and controlling.
