MAIN CONCEPTS
Phonetics
- It is a scientific description of the speech sounds that exist in a language, it also essentially seeks to trace the physiological processes involved in the production of sound.
- The articulatory feature deals with the physical production of speech, that is, it describes which organs are involved in its production, the position they take and how these positions vary the path of the air on its journey through the throat until it is expelled through the mouth.
- Examples: Palatal; during the pronunciation of these consonants the back of the tongue approaches the hard palate. They are palatal consonants [ʝ] or [ʎ].
- Difference
- 1 - Phonetics deals with the production of sound. 2 - Phonetics is concerned with providing the set of features that can describe the sounds of a language. 3 - Phonetics provides the raw materials for the description of the production of speech sounds.

Phonology
- It deals with the regularities that govern the phonetic realizations of sounds in the words of a language, it seeks to determine how the elements of this abstract system behave in real speech, it actually delineates the functioning of sounds in particular contexts.
- Suprasegmental feature: It is a feature of speech that affects a segment longer than the phoneme, such as stress, intonation, rhythm, duration.
- Example: The word doctor has three syllables, but one of them m- is articulated with a combination of tone, intensity and duration that make it prominent. This phonetic prominence in Spanish means that this combination of phonetic features is distinctive and the syllable mé- is said to have a suprasegmental phonological element.
- Difference
- 1 - Phonology studies the behavior of sound in the realization. 2 - Phonology provides the information that has to do with the functional pattern of sounds in the language. 3 - Phonology deals with the organization of sound patterns in language.
