Computer network topologies
what is a topology?
- It is essentially the layout of the network. They can be arranged in many different way but star and mesh topology are the ones knows the most
Types of topology
- mesh
- all devices are connected to each other
- pros
- communications can be received more quickly if the route to the intended recipient is short
- as there are multiple connections and no central node, a node should not become isolated
- cons
- many connections would mean a lot more maintenance is needed
- many connections would mean a lot more maintenance is needed
- more about mesh topology
- In a mesh topology there is no central connection point. Each node is connected to at least one other node (usually to more than one). A node is capable of sending communications to and receiving communications from other nodes. The nodes pass on communications until they reach their final destination. There are two types of mesh topology: full mesh topology and partial mesh topology
- star
- all devices are connected to the center which in most cases is a switch
- pros
- if a device fails or cable is disconnected the rest of the devices remain unaffected
- It has a better performance than all the rest of setups
- cons
- in wired networks every device needs a cable to connect to the switch
- if theres a problem with the switch or the server the whole network brakes down
- more about star topology
- All nodes indirectly connect to each other through a switch, hub or router. The switch acts as a central point through which all communications are passed. At home, your computer network is probably in a star topology. A router with a wireless access point (WAP) provides the central connection for all nodes.
