Resumo de Recurso

The Reactivity Series
  1. Alkali Metals
    1. Reactivity increases down the group
      1. Reactions involve the loss of the outermost electron which changes the metal atom into a metal 1+ ion
        1. Metals float because they are less dense than water
          1. Spin because hydrogen is being given off
            1. Reaction is exothermic. Metals melt in a ball
              1. For the more reactive metals the hydrogen explodes
                1. The outer electron (-) gets further from nucleus (+) as we go down the group. This reduces the force of attraction
                2. Displacement Reactions
                  1. Occurs when a MORE reactive metal takes the place of a LESS reactive metal in a compound
                    1. If a metal is below carbon in the reacivity series, then carbon can be a cheap way of removing oxygen from the oxide
                    2. Oxidation and Reduction
                      1. Oxygen+Reduction=Redox
                        1. Electron transfer
                          1. In reactions, electrons are transfered
                            1. LOST
                              1. Oxidation
                              2. GAINED
                                1. Reduction
                              3. Oxidising agent = gives O2 gets reduced
                              4. Half equations
                                1. Some displacement reactions contain spectator ions that we can cancel out
