READING COMPREHENSION TECHNIQUES

1. SCANNING

   • To locate a specific fact or piece of information
     • IT looks for
       • Names
       • Dates
       • Statistics
       • Facts
   • When you scan, you don't read every word, only the words that answer your question.

2. SKIMMING

   • To get the main ideas and a general overview of the content of the text fastly.
     • It looks for
       • Clue words
         • Why
         • How
         • What
         • When
         • Who
       • Proper nouns
       • Typographical characteristics (italics, boldface, underlining, etc.)
       • Unusual words, especially if capitalized
       • Qualifying adjectives (best, worst, most, etc.)

3. PREDICTING

   • To think ahead while reading and anticipating information and events in the text.
     • It helps the students make connections between new and previous information.
       • It is used for
         • Reading
         • Writing

4. INFERRING

   • It is a mental process by which we reach a conclusion based on specific evidence.
     • it´s the way in which you incorporate your Interpretation .

5. GUESSING

   • To assume, presume, or assert a fact
     • In it you can use
       • Affixes
       • Context to guess word meaning
