Sleep deprivation
1. Total deprivation
  1. case studies such as Peter Tripp who stayed awake for 201 hours and suffered psychotic episodes
  2. as a result support the idea that sleep is for restoration of brain and neurostransmitters
  3. Randy Gardner stayed awake for 260 hours - did not have the same effects as Tripp
  4. does not support findings that sleep deprivation causes psychotic episodes
2. Partial deprivation
  1. if denied REM sleep participants spend more sleep in REM
  2. suggests that REM sleep is more important for us than other stages
  3. studies done in a laboratory in order to record sleep patterns
    1. therefore lack ecological validity
  4. we are unlikely to get a normal nights sleep in a laboratory whilst wired to machines
Endurance athletes
1. Shapiro et al found that athletes such as marathon runners sleep for longer after the event than usual
  1. suggesting that sleep does aid restoration
2. however other studies do not support these findings
3. while such athletes fell asleep quicker they did not sleep for longer
Amino acids
1. Horne argues that the amino acids that are needed for protein synthesis
2. tissue repair and growth are only available for 5 hours after eating
3. suggests that protein synthesis cannot occur during sleep
4. casts doubt on restoration theories
IDA
1. Case study evaluation
  1. only represent a small sample of people and these people are likely to be unique
  2. will have volunteered for the study and probably motivated to cope with the deprivation
  3. therefore be careful in generalising these findings
2. Animal studies
  1. experiments on animals suggests sleep deprivation can lead to death
    1. supporting restoration theory
  2. as well as being unethical, sleep patterns are different in animals from humans
  3. procedures used to keep animals awake which may have lead to stress and this could cause death rather than deprivation
