Understanding by design
Offers a planning process and structure to guide curriculum, assessment, and instruction.
Two key ideas
- 1) focus on teaching and assessing for understanding and learning transfer,
- 2) design curriculum “backward” from those ends.
Based on seven principles
- 1.Enhanced learning while dedicating in curricular planning
- 2. Helps focus curriculum and teaching
- 3. Understanding appears when students realize of their learning through authentic performance.
- 6. reflects and improves approach to student achievements
- 6. Units and curriculum enhance curricular quality and effectiveness,
- 4. Effective curriculum is planned backward
- 5. Teachers are guides of understanding. Not traditional knowledge handling
It has 3 stages
- 1. Identify Desired Results
- It refers to:
- How will we know we've succeeded?: Specific results that can be measured,, actions needed to achieve them and Anticipated results in the positive rather than avoiding an undesired result.
- It refers to:
- 2. Determine Assessment Evidence
- Can interpret
- Can apply
- Demonstrate perspective
- Have self-knowledge
- Display empathy
- Can explain
- 3. Plan Learning Experiences and Instruction
- It refers to:
- What will need to be taught and coached, and how should it best be taught, in light of the performance goals?, What sequence of activity best suits the desired results?, How will we make learning both engaging and effective, given the goals and needed evidence?
- It refers to:
- 1. Identify Desired Results
