   • Bob Metcalfe
   • David Boggs

2. "The Competence"

   • Token Ring
   • FDDI
   • ATM

3. Success

   • The first widely deployed high-speed LAN
   • Less complex and expensive

4. Original Ethernet

   • Has used coaxial bus to interconnect the nodes

5. Broadcast LAN

6. Topology

   • Now
     • Bus Topology
   • Past
     • Star Topology
       • Hub at the center
     • Star topology
       • Switch at the center

7. Frame Structure

   • Data Field
     • IP Datagram
   • Destination Address
     • Destination MAC Address
   • Source Address
     • MAC Address Transmitter
   • Type
     • Permits Ethernet to multiplex network-layer protocols
   • CRC
     • Detect bit errors in the frame
   • Preamble
     • Serve to “wake up” the receiving adapters
     • Synchronize their clocks to that of the sender’s clock

8. Standarized by IEEE 802.3

   • 10BASE-T
   • 10BASE-2
   • 100BASE-T
   • ...
   • The first part of the acronym refers to the speed of the standard
   • The final part of the acronym refers to the physical media itself
