Cloud Services

  1. IBM BlueMix : IBM Cloud is a suite of cloud computing services from IBM that offers both platform as a service (PaaS) and infrastructure as a service (IaaS). With IBM Cloud PaaS -- which is based on the open source cloud platform Cloud Foundry -- developers can use IBM services to create, manage, run and deploy various types of applications for the public cloud, as well as for local or on-premises environments

  2. IBM Cloud is a suite of cloud computing services from IBM that offers both platform as a service (PaaS) and infrastructure as a service (IaaS). With IBM Cloud IaaS, organizations can deploy and access virtualized IT resources -- such as compute power, storage and networking -- over the internet. For compute, organizations can choose between bare-metal or virtual servers. With IBM Cloud PaaS -- which is based on the open source cloud platform Cloud Foundry -- developers can use IBM services to create, manage, run and deploy various types of applications for the public cloud, as well as for local or on-premises environments

    • Cons
      • Need: VISUALIZATION CAPABILITIES! Particularly with the Conversation Service.
      • Need: Annotation capabilities for dialog nodes in Conversation Service.
      • Need: Search/querying capabilities in Conversation Service
      • Need: Clearer documentation of the S2T service. I had to use a third party website for an understanding of how to use this.
      • It isn't free-for-all:
      • User-friendliness (or lack thereof)
  3. Amazon Web Services (AWS) is a comprehensive, evolving cloud computing platform provided by Amazon. It provides a mix of infrastructure as a service (IaaS), platform as a service (PaaS) and packaged software as a service (SaaS) offerings. AWS launched in 2006 from the internal infrastructure that Amazon.com built to handle its online retail operations. AWS was one of the first companies to introduce a pay-as-you-go cloud computing model that scales to provide users with compute, storage or throughput as needed.

    • Pro and characteristics
      • Storage is incredibly cheap
      • Storage is versatile
      • Implausibly convenient if you already use AWS for alternative comes
      • In no time implementation
      • Simply verified as an information center leader
    • Cons
      • AWS contains a important history of outages
      • Speed. Retrieval may be slow if you do not acquire fast downloads
      • Transactions may be high-priced. You acquire activity additionally to storage
      • Two points of support. You've got to support your computer code and also the AWS backside
      • Should use Amazon internet Services API to try and do bulk uploads.
      • Communication between your EDM computer code and AWS may be tough to setup.
  4. Microsoft Azure: Microsoft has leveraged its constantly-expanding worldwide network of data centers to create Azure, a cloud platform for building, deploying, and managing services and applications, anywhere. Azure lets you add cloud capabilities to your existing network through its platform as a service (PaaS) model, or entrust Microsoft with all of your computing and network needs with Infrastructure as a Service (IaaS). Either option provides secure, reliable access to your cloud hosted data—one built on Microsoft’s proven architecture

      • Batch
      • PowerShell
    • Pros and characteristics
      • Extremely solid platform, very easy to get started, very easy to manage, billing is a breeze to understand and monitor
      • Microsoft is diving into the concept of distributed computing here and its going to be huge. Right now we use the Azure platform for many of our customers, this allows us to scale their web apps to their needs in time. The platform is robust and generally reliable. The support from Microsoft is amazing.
      • We have been able to scale quickly from a single customer site up to 15 with no changes to our code other than the routine fixes, the azure infrastructure meant we were able to focus on the customer facing interactions rather than the backend.
      • The availability, speed of delivery and ability to scale the services are great. We can provision services, within minutes \ hours rather than days or weeks. Test out new functionality on development servers \ apps that would require sign off for expensive hardware \ software, with minimal cost and impact to the business.
    • Cons
      • Although Azure can be a reasonably priced option, it can get expensive quickly. Ensure that you double check pricing before provisioning your services.
      • The pricing structures are confusing, and its difficult to know ahead of time how much a service will cost once implemented.
      • As others have noted, the billing can be difficult to measure and predict. You just kind of have to try it and see.
      • Requires Platform Expertise
  5. Google Cloud: Google Cloud Platform is a suite of public cloud computing services offered by Google. The platform includes a range of hosted services for compute, storage and application development that run on Google hardware. Google Cloud Platform services can be accessed by software developers, cloud administrators and other enterprise IT professionals over the public internet or through a dedicated network connection.

      • Ruby
      • PHP
      • Java
      • .NET
      • Python
    • Pros and characteristics
      • Modern, fast UI: both the web UI and terminal console application for managing Google Cloud projects work very well and are nice to use.
      • It feels like GCE is built on top of modern technology e.g. fast boot times, flexible networking, promise of no/low contention for resources.
      • Google is 100% carbon neutral (some from offset). They are seriously pushing their green credentials and are far ahead of any other provider
      • They are leading the container hosting push. They may be behind many of AWS's features but when it comes to containers, Google lead the technology because they created it and have run it in production for years before productising it.
    • Cons
      • Their support UI is horrible. It's difficult to manage users and tickets have arbitrary limits for things like descriptions and attachments, which make it difficult to send debug info
      • Networking pricing is expensive. This is not just Google, but AWS and others too. We get free worldwide private transit with Softlayer and this would be a huge cost on Google for our current load
      • The product feels a little experimental. There are regular outages causes by things which should not happen
      • They are quite a long way behind AWS and Azure in terms of product range
