3. Chemiosmotic Theory

   • **energy from ETS is used to pump protons across cell membrane, which builds a high H+ concentration outside the cell
     • charge difference (generates ATP)
       • add valinomycin, K+ enters cell
     • pH difference (generates ATP)
       • decrease in external H+ increases pH
