Types of Malware

1. Virus

   • Adds malicious code in a program/data
   • spreads with users help and infectes other devices
   • Does infect files
   • modifies/deletes data
   • used to launch attacks

2. Worm

   • spreads between computers using networks
   • uses vulnerabilities in applications/operating systems
   • Does not infect files
   • Replicates itself by infecting computers on the same network
   • modifies/deletes data
   • used to launch attacks

3. Trojan

   • Disguises as a useful program/function/action but does malicious action in the background
   • Spreads with the help of user
   • modifies/deletes/steals data
   • used to launch attacks

4. Spyware

   • spies on users to collect their information
   • tracking software installed without the users knowledge
   • Collects data from the users device and makes it available to the attacker

5. Adware

   • presents advertising material to the user in an unexpecting/unwanted way
   • displays objectionable material, pop up ads can interfere with productivity and slow device, can be a nuisance
   • Collects data from the users device and makes it available to the attacker

6. Ransomware

   • prevents users device from properly working until a fee has been paid
   • Collects data from the users device and makes it available to the attacker

7. Botnets

   • collection of internet connected device that are infected with malware and are controlled by hackers
   • used for launch attacks
   • used for spam emails, spreading malware to create more zombies and botnets and for denying online services
