1. get your/a foot in the door

   • to enter a business at a low level with the opportunity for advancement or being more successful in the future. A first step in something.

2. behind closed doors

   • If something happens behind closed doors it happens in secret, away from observers.

3. live next door

   • To live next door to someone means to live in the house or apartment next to someone 

4. show someone to the door

   • to take someone to the door as they are leaving. For example, after the meeting the director showed the visitors to the door.

5. show someone the door

   • to make it clear to someone that they must leave a building/meeting/employment... John insulted the owner of the shop and he was shown the door.

6. open the door to something

   • to make something possible. A university degree will open the door to future employment.
