Race to the Sea (1914)

1. When was it?

   • Sept-Oct 1914
     • After failed attempt of Schlieffen Plan/Marne both sides realised they couldn't fight head on
       • (Both sides already dug some trenches after Marne)

2. What happened?

   • Each army tried to sneak around the side of the other army (OUTFLANK) whilst going north
     • By November, both sides had reached the English Channel and Switzerland
       • Because they could not go around eachother anymore they dug deep TRENCHES that went from the sea to Switzerland
         • Ended mobile warfare and started trench warfare (the stalemate).
           • Defensive technology was superior to offensive tactics (massive trench warfare was unprecedented and new)
