  1. Note taking.

    • The Cornell Method
      • The Cornell method provides a systematic format for condensing and organizing notes without laborious recopying. After writing the notes in the main space, use the left-hand space to label each idea and detail with a key word or "cue."
        • Method.
          • Rule your paper with a 2 ½ inch margin on the left leaving a six-inch area on the right in which to make notes. During class, take down information in the six-inch area. When the instructor moves to a new point, skip a few lines. After class, complete phrases and sentences as much as possible. For every significant bit of information, write a cue in the left margin. To review, cover your notes with a card, leaving the cues exposed. Say the cue out loud, then say as much as you can of the material underneath the card. When you have said as much as you can, move the card and see if what you said matches what is written. If you can say it, you know it.
  2. Mind maps.

    • A mind map is a diagram used to visually organize information. A mind map is often created around a single concept, drawn as an image in the center of a blank page, to which associated representations of ideas such as images, words and parts of words are added. Major ideas are connected directly to the central concept, and other ideas branch out from those.
      • Mind maps can be drawn by hand, either as "rough notes" during a lecture, meeting or planning session, for example, or as higher quality pictures when more time is available.
  3. Mnemonics techniques.

    • Music mnemonics.
      • How many lyrics to songs do you remember? How did you come to remember them? The same method you used to recall song lyrics also can work just as well in academics. Music can used to help students recall important details to main ideas and many learners have made songs out of information when a list of items must be learned. Advertising on radio and TV uses music to help potential customers remember their products when shopping. With sufficient repetition of commercials, advertisers have discovered that when shoppers see their product in the stores that often the shopper will start reciting a oft repeated phrases from the commercial or start singing the lyrics to the promotion melody. The results has been increased sales of the product.
        • You can make a song or jingle using any type of music you choose for any list of items. Music Mnemonics work best with long lists. For example, some children learn the ABC's by singing the "ABC" song. Other children learn all the states in alphabetical order using the "50 Nifty United States" song.
  4. Create schedules.

    • Setting up a study schedule
      • The first step of setting up a study schedule is choosing a calendar or program to arrange the schedule on. Whatever a person chooses to use, it should be something that they can easily refer to and that has enough space to document daily study requirements for at least a semester. Once a calendar is in hand, the student should mark down or enter all of the dates that are set by the college or high school, such as final examination dates or class times. If the student participates in a sport, dates and times of each game and practice session should also be documented. After the athletic and fixed academic hours and activities have been entered on the calendar, it is time to add one's study time. Ideally, students should allow two hours of study for every one hour spent in class. Assignments and projects should be prioritized and scheduled accordingly based on when they are due and the level of importance.
        • 8 tips of getting an effective schedule
          • Place the calendar or printed schedule in a visible location so that it is easy to see and follow.
            • When writing dates on a physical calendar, use a pencil so that it is easy to make changes if needed.
              • Don't create a schedule that is overly rigid or that isn't flexible enough to accommodate emergencies or conflicts that may arise.
                • Schedules should be created so that the study times are consistent each day, which will help create positive study habits.
                  • Don't forsake well-balanced meals for study time. Poor eating habits can lead to fatigue, an inability to concentrate, and consequently less effective study time.
                    • Schedule study time in a location that has minimal distractions or interruptions.
                      • Study one course at a time for no more than two hours.
                        • Color coded schedules are often easier to see and follow.
