Cyclic Photophosphorylation

1. Definition

   • The synthesis of ATP during photosynthesis, coupled to the cyclic electron transfer to and from P700, involve in photosystem I, using a series of electron carriers.

2. Purpose

   • to produce ATP faster
     • Why?
       • to produce 1 molecule of glucose, 18 ATP and 12 NADPH are required.
         • not enough ATP are synthesized in non-cyclic photophosphorylation

3. Pathway

4. What triggers it?

   • accumulation of NADPH from non-cyclic photophosphorylation
     • as result, switch from non cyclic photophosphorylation to cyclic photophosphorylation
