Potential Difference (Voltage) Work done in moving a charge of 1 coulomb from one point to another Scalar quantity Unit = Volt

V = W/Q V = voltage W = work Q = charge

Potential When two charges are very far apart, there is no force between them and they are said to be at zero potential We take the Earth to be our zero potential The potential difference between a point and the earth is called the potential of that point When a conductor is earthed, this means that its potential is brought to zero

Voltmeter Measures voltage Connected in parallel with the component that it is measuring

Electromotive force emf A voltage that is applied to a circuit

Sources of emf A device in which any form of energy is converted to electrical energy Battery Electric generator
