Dramatic Encounters - The Exam

A Streetcar Named Desire is featured on Section B of the AQA exam, and is worth 45 marks. The exam is open book, allowing you to take an unannotated copy of the play in with you. The focus of this section will be 'conflict.'It is important to note that 'conflict' does not just refer to war or an argument, but it can be created through a tense atmosphere or from the clashes of different lifestyles between the characters.

Dramatic Structure

Exposition - beginning of a short story or scene, the characters are introduced, we learn about the setting and we are introduced to the main conflict or problem Rising Action - this develops the conflict, building interest or suspense occurs. Climax - turning point int he story, main character usually is confronted with conflict and changes in some way Falling Action - all loose ends of the plot are tied up, and the climax is taken care of Denouement - the end of the plot/scene, the resolution of the conflict. The story comes to a reasonable ending, unless it is a tragedy.
