Social Media and Teens: how does social media affect teenagers mental health?

The verdict is still out on wether social media is damaging to the mental health of teens. This is in part to the lack of research. Some studies show that online connections with small groups of people can be benificial to teens, while other research points to a rise in symtoms of anxiety, depression, and eating disorders. The other reason that it is difficult to get a good read on the issue is that social media is constantly chaning and evolving. Plus, no long-term studies have been completed. So, we're left with making educated guesses based on current research. There's just not enough data to back up the potential long-term pros and cons of living on "likes."

There are positive aspects of social media. Teens who struggle with social skills, social anxiety, or who don't have easy access to face - to - face socializing with other teens might benfit from connecting with others through social media.

Teens can use social media to connect with others and create friendships, but they also can confront cyberbulling, trolls, sleep deprivation, and less frequent face - to - face interactions, ect.

6 ways that social media affects our mental health

A study found that social media is linked to greater feelings of social isolation. people looked at how much 11 social media sites were used, including facebook, twitter, google+, youtube, linkedin, instagram, pinterest, tumbler, vine, snapchat, and reddit . then they corralated with their precieved social isolation. Not suprisingly it turned out that the more time people spent on these sites the more socially isolated they percieved themselves to be. and percieved social isolation is one of the worst things for us mentally and physically.

part of the unhealthy cycle is we keep coming back to social media even though it doesn't make us feel very good.

a couple of years ago a study found that more friends on social media doesn't nesissarily mean that you have a better social life - there seems to be a cap on the amount of friends that a persons brain can handle, and it takes actual social interaction not virtual, to keep these friendships up.

being on social media when you have time to kill or worse when you need an emotional uplift is a bad idea.

how using social media effects teenagers

many worry about how technology could affect toddlers developmentally. preschoolers are picking up new social and cognitive skills that they could lose when being glued to a device for hours on end.

Teens are masters at keeping themselves occupied after school until late into the night. wether hey are doing homework or not they are often online on their phones texting, sharing, scrolling, ect.

before almost every teen had an instagram accounts teens kept themselves busy by chatting on their phones or in person meeting up to hang out somewhere. It may seem like it was a lot of aimless hanging around but they were experimenting and trying out skills, succeding and failing in tons of tiny real-time interactions that a lot of kids are missing out on. modern teens are learning to do most of their interactions while looking at a screen and not at another person.

learning how to make friends involves a certain amount of risk-taking. this is true for making a new friend and also keeping a friendship. but when a friendship is formed over texts or online, they are stripped of many of the most personal and sometimes intimidating aspects of communication. it's easier to keep your guard up when you're texting, so less is at stake. you aren't seeing or hearing the effect that your words are having on the other person. Because the conversation in't happening in real time, each party/person is able to take more time to respond. some kids say that calling someone on the phone is "too intense" - it requires more direct communication.

Kids and teens text things that they would never say to the persons face.

almost everyone has a phone or has access to a phone and we all respond to things pretty quickly.

Kids should be used to seeing faces not bent over screens.
