Doctrine II Midterm Study Guide

Doctrine of Creation 1) Define Pantheism

- there is no distinction between God and the world. They are one.

2) Understand its view of creation

-pantheism says that God and creation share the same nature and essence.

3) Identify problems with pantheism

it cannot account for the existence of the universe. The universe is not infinitely old. It had a beginning.

This would mean that God also had a beginning, but how can something bring itself into existence? This is impossible, so this leaves us with the question of where God and the universe came from.

4) Know if the whole Trinity is involved in creation or not

-Father, Son, Spirit IS the agent of creation. The whole Trinity is involved in creation.

5) Define and describe "creation ex nihilo"

-creation from nothing, out of nothing

6) Basic features of young earth

1. all basic types of organisms were created by God during the creation week of Gen 1-22. "Day" = really means one day3. The earth is very young (10k-20k yrs old)4. The curse of Gen 3 is the beginning of sin and death. Before Adam fell, there was no death.5. The flood of Noah was a historical event, that was global in intent and effect

7) Basic features of Theistic evolution

1. Evolution is the process by which creatures came into being, but that this process was guided by God.

2. God intervened at crucial points, such as:a. The creation of matter at the beginningb. The creation of the simplest life form

8) Basic features of gap theory

1. This view holds that there is a gap of millions of years between Gen 1:1 and Gen 1:22. God made an original creation, but because of rebellion against God, it was judged and became "formless and void and dark".3. Gen 1:3-2:3 is really the second creation of God, accomplished in six literal days.4. The fossil record displays fossils from the first creation, which could very well date from billions of years ago (Gen 1:1)

9) Basic features of day-age (old earth) view

1. Evidence from radiometric dating; the time it takes to cool liquid magma ...

2. Creation occurred in a long process.3. There is a strong correlation between the Genesis creation account and some accounts of the universe's origins as proposed by geology and astronomy.4. The curse of Gen 3 only drastically affected the human race and brought human death5. Noah's flood was an historical event, but it was only local, not universal

10) Know what the goal of creation is

- to bring glory to God

Doctrine of Humanity 1) Know on which day humanity was created

- Humans were created on the 6th day

2) Know options for what "us" means in Gen 1:26

1. Plural of majesty

2. God addressing angels3. God speaking to God self in triune

3) Know what humanity's mandate is in Gen 1:28

(Gen 1:28) to rule under God as supreme kings

4) Know why we need to hold to Adam and Eve being real historical people

Bible clearly views Adam as a historical figure.

5) Know what Gen 1-2 say about the equality of men and women

-God created man and woman in His own image equally

6) What does Gen 1-2 say about marriage?

Marriage is a gift of God. When God brought to Adam the woman who was specially created for him, he cried out joyfully: “This is now bone of my bones, and flesh of my flesh” (Gen. 2:23). This joy over a real companion is the explicit will of God: “It is not good for the man to be alone. I will make a helper suitable for him” (Gen. 2:18). Marriage has been established by the Creator; it is therefore not a humanly devised institution

7) Know basic features of the three main views of the "image of God"

1. (Functional) The image of God consists in something we do - dominion and rule

2. (Substantive - Essential)The image of God is some quality or attribute of human nature (Morality, Free will, Rationality)3. (Relational) The image of God is the experience of relationships or the capacity for relationships

8) Was the image of God lost in the Fall?

No

9) In Catholic view, was the image of God lost in the fall?

No?

Doctrine of Sin 1) Know the sources of sin

There are three main candidates for the original source of sin: God, Satan, and the Fall.
