- 11A woman of 34 suffered from severe anxiety, insomnia, worrying and brooding, palpitations and mental restlessness. She also had headaches affecting the right eye and side of the head along the Gall Bladder channel. The headaches were severe and throbbing in character. Her periods came irregularly, sometimes late and sometimes early, were heavy and the blood was dark with clots. She also experienced premenstrual irritability. Her pulse was Wiry but Fine and her tongue was Deep-Red with red points along the sides and the tip, the tip was redder and swollen and there was a thick yellow coating.These manifestations are rather complicated. The pattern on the whole is one of Full-Heat as the tongue is Red and has a coating. There is Liver-Fire, which is
causing the headaches. This is evident also from the Wiry quality of the pulse and the Red colour of the tongue with red points on the sides. Liver-Fire over
a long period of time can easily be transmitted to the Heart and cause Heart-Fire; this was the cause of the anxiety, insomnia, palpitations, worrying, mental restlessness and a red and swollen tip of the tongue with red points. In addition, there was also stasis of
Liver-Blood as evidenced by the premenstrual irritability and the irregularity of her periods with dark

- 14A 37-year-old woman suffered from what had been diagnosed as manic depression since her teenage years. The symptoms differed according to whether she was at the manic or depressive phase. In the manic phase these were: palpitations, uncontrolled activity, 'cannot stop', talking very fast, overexcited, uncontrolled laughter, obsessional thoughts. In the depressive phase they were: frightened of failure, frustration, depressed mood, did not want to see people, tiredness, inability to work, mentally unclear. The tongue was Red, with a tip redder and swollen with red points, and a thick sticky yellow coating. The Pulse was Full and Overflowing.All these manifestations point to obstruction of the Heart orifices and misting of the Mind by Fire and Phlegm. The Red tongue, Overflowing pulse and the mental symptoms all indicate Fire; the sticky tongue coating denotes the presence of Phlegm.
- 15A woman aged 67 had been suffering from manic depression for a long time. She had bouts of depression alternating with bouts of manic behaviour. These symptoms appeared after the death of her husband. During the depressive phase she felt extremely gloomy, had no interest in life, did not wash or speak to anyone. During the manic phase she would have lots of energy, go for several days without sleep and spend money uncontrollably. Her pulse was Wiry and Overflowing on the Front positions. Her tongue was red with a sticky yellow coating all over, and the tip was redder and swollen.All the manifestations point to Phlegm and Fire stirring the Heart and obstructing the Heart orifices, causing her mental symptoms.

- 20A 52-year-old lady had been suffering from bouts of severe palpitations and stabbing pain in the chest radiating to the left arm for 30 years. During the attacks her lips became cyanotic and she felt cold. The tongue was Bluish-Purple and the pulse Knotted.This is an example of stasis of Heart-Blood from deficiency of Heart-Yang.
- 21A 77-year-old man suffered from a more or less permanent sensation of constriction of the chest elicited by exertion. The tongue was Reddish-Purple and the pulse was Wiry.This is an example of stasis of Heart-Blood from Heart-Fire.
