How to calculate ANOVA table by hand

A-Total Sums of Squares

• 
• Work out overall mean for all scores
• Work out how much each score varies from the mean score
• Square the variations
• Add all the squared variations together
• Legenda: (doubt they'll ask this one)

B-Within group sum of squares

• 
• Legenda: (doubt they will ask this one)
• Work out overall mean for each group
• Work out variation of scores from group mean
• Square the variation
• Add variations together

C-Between group sums of squares

• 
• Total sums of squares-within sums of squares
• So it would be A-B=C
• Legenda: (could ask this one if they give us the results for A and B)

D-Between group df

• 
• Number of groups-1
• So if we are asked how many groups there were, it would be the number in the table+1
• Legenda: (could be asked)

E-Within groups df

• 
• Workout the number of P's within each group-1
• Add scores together for each group
• E.g (13-1)+(15-1)+(19-1)=44
• Legenda: (don't think they could ask us this one unless they told us how many participants were in each group)

F-Total df

• 
• Number of P's-1
• So to work it out, it will be number of P's+1
• Legenda: (will probably be asked)

G-Calculating ETA squared

• 
• Sum of squares between/sum of squares total (C/A)=G
• Legenda: (could possibly ask us this)

H&I-Calculating mean squares

• 
• H-sum of squares between/between df (C/D)
• I-sum of squares within/within df (B/E)
• Legenda: (could possibly ask this)

J-Calculating the F value

• 
• Mean square between/mean square within (H/I)=J
• Legenda: (could ask this)
