1The population of China is [blank_start]1.3 billion[blank_end]. They have strongly enforced the 'One Child Policy' since it was announced in [blank_start]1979[blank_end]. If families stick to the policy they are given benefits such as [blank_start]longer maternity leave,[blank_end] better [blank_start]housing[blank_end] and free [blank_start]education[blank_end] for the child. If they proceed to have another child the second isn't given [blank_start]any benefits[blank_end] and are also [blank_start]fined[blank_end].
Saying this though the rules have become more relaxed in recent years - for example parents in rural area are allowed to have a second child if the first has a [blank_start]disability[blank_end] or if the first is a [blank_start]girl[blank_end] allowing the parents to allow the child/ren to work on the [blank_start]land[blank_end].
Additionally if one of the parents has a [blank_start]disability[blank_end] themselves or if both parents are [blank_start]only children[blank_end] a second child is allowed. This allows for the children to look after the parents.
The main benefits to the one child policy is the fact that up to [blank_start]400 million[blank_end] births have been prevented and the fertility average has dropped from [blank_start]5.7[blank_end] in 1970 to [blank_start]1.8[blank_end] in the present day. Aside from the one child policy some believe that a change in the Chinese [blank_start]economy[blank_end] and [blank_start]society[blank_end] meant that the birth rate decreased.- A1.3 billion
