Zeus awakes from his slumber and sees [blank_start]the catastrophe created in his absence[blank_end].

Feeling pity for Hector, Zeus curses Hera for her disobedience, promising to [blank_start]punish her[blank_end].

Hera, trying to escape blame, swears that she did not [blank_start]make Poseidon help the Achaeans[blank_end].

Zeus accepts her oaths and tells her they must [blank_start]reign in Poseidon[blank_end].

Zeus tells Hera that his plan is simply to [blank_start]bring Achilles back into battle[blank_end], and that Troy will eventually fall to the Achaeans.

Zeus asks Hera to summon [blank_start]Iris[blank_end] and [blank_start]Apollo[blank_end].

Iris will send a message to [blank_start]Poseidon[blank_end], telling him to stand down. Apollo will rouse [blank_start]Hector[blank_end] and give him new [blank_start]strength[blank_end] to lead the Trojan charge.

Ares, angered at [blank_start]the death of his son Ascalaphus[blank_end], attempts to return to the battle, but [blank_start]Athena[blank_end] checks him with a stern warning.

[blank_start]Zeus[blank_end] warns that he is too powerful for Poseidon, even though Poseidon “never shrinks from claiming to be my equal.”

With Apollo’s assistance, Hector increases his fame by [blank_start]driving the Achaeans back to their ships[blank_end].

If the Trojans succeed in [blank_start]capturing or destroying the ships[blank_end], then all of the Achaeans will be slaughtered, having no way to escape home.

Great Ajax and Hector once again encounter each other in battle. Teucer kills several Trojans, but Zeus [blank_start]breaks his bowstring[blank_end] just before he can take aim at Hector.

The Trojans are close to storming the Achaean ships, but it is clearly indicated that the Trojan advance is simply part of Zeus’ larger plan to ultimately [blank_start]increase Achilles glory[blank_end].

The ships are [blank_start]both vessels and homes[blank_end] for the Achaeans, and their destruction would be the final blow in the war.
