Human rights

• Christopher Bruce was asked to create a piece of work for the Chilean human rights committee due to the fact that Bruce sympathised for the victims. The piece was based off of the Chilean dictator, Pinochet who killed and tortured many people, this took away their human rights because a majority of them would've been unable to fight because their strength had been drawn out of them whilst they were being tortured. Ghost dances incorporates themes of poverty, persecution, abuse of human rights.

life

• There are 35,000 Chileans whose lives were taken and more who were tortured throughout Pinochet's ruling. It is shown throughout the piece that death infect so many people not just the dead. Those who loved and cared for those who died were infected as well as those who died or who were tortured.

Death

• Ghost Dances was made as a tribute to the victims of the political oppressions people faced during the time of Pinochet in South America. The dead represent the different social backgrounds and their individual characters. the performance shows how fragile humanity is and how people can get caught up in the evilness of the world and suffer and end up dying. The Ghost Dancers symbolise death due to the fact that they hold an image of brute force and death is known to be very brutal.

love

• In Dolencias, their is a dance between a man and a woman and the woman keeps swinging her arms which communicates sorrow which then further conveys love because she is worried about losing the guy which shows the audience that she has a lot of love for the guy she is dancing with. After the part of the dance when the man dies, the women shows that she is in despair due to the loss of the man and this reinforces how much love she has for the man. This is a sad and emotional dance for a woman who knows her loved one is being taken to his death and theres nothing she can do about it.
