Math Terms For CAHSEE Math Test
Flashcards do conjunto (12)
- 1Absolute valueThe absolute value of a number is the distance between the number and the origin (0).
Ex: |-9| = 9 because -9 is 9 spaces away from 0 in the negative direction. - 2Adjacent anglesTwo angles in a plane which share a common vertex and a common side but do not overlap.
- 3Scientific notationA standardized way of writing real numbers. All real numbers are written in the form a x 10^b, where 1 ≤ a < 10 and b is an integer.
Ex: 351 is written 3.51 x 10^2 in scientific notation. - 4MedianThe value for which half the numbers are larger and half are smaller. If there are two middle numbers, the median is the arithmetic mean of the two middle numbers.
- 5MeanAverage
- 6ModeThe number that occurs the most often in a list.
- 7MidpointThe point halfway between two given points. The midpoint formula is:
((x1+x2)/2, (y1+y2)/2) - 8X-interceptA point at which a graph intersects the x-axis. Y=0 where the line crosses the x-axis, so plug 0 in for y and solve for x.
- 9Y-interceptA point at which a graph intersects the y-axis.
- 10SlopeA number which is used to indicate the steepness of a line, as well as indicating whether the line is tilted uphill or downhill.
Slope (m) = rise (y2-y1)/run (x2-x1). - 11ReciprocalThe reciprocal of x is 1/x. In other words, a reciprocal is a fraction flipped upside down.
- 12Slope intercept form of an equationY = mx + b, where m is the slope and b is the y-intercept.
