Flashcards do conjunto (20)
- 1what is temperature?a measure of the average kinetic energy of particles in a substance that results in how hot or cold the substance is.
- 2what is conduction?a method of heat transfer in which heat is passed by vibration of particles.
- 3what is absolute zero?the lowest possible temperature -273 degrees Celsius.
- 4what is temperature measured in?temperature is usually measured in degrees Celsius. Fahrenheit and kelvin scales are also used to measure temperature.
- 5The three scales commonly used to measure temperature

- 6what are poor conductors?the are plastic , air , cloth ,wood and rubber are all very poor conductors of heat.
- 7what is convection?convection is the circular motion that happens when warmer air or liquid-which has faster moving molecules, making it less dense- rise, while the cooler air or liquid drops down.
- 8what is radiation?a movement of heat in the form of electromagnetic waves, which van travel through a vacuum.
- 9what are some examples of convection?Boiling water - the heat passes from the burner into the pot, heating the water at the bottom
steaming cup of hot tea- the steam is showing heat being transfered into the air
ice melting-heat moves to the ice from the air. - 10what are some examples of good conductors?silver ,gold, aluminum and cooper are all good conductors of heat.
- 11what is the temperature in which water freezes on these scale Fahrenheit Celsius kelvin32 Fahrenheit
0 degrees Celsius
273 k - 12the temperature in which particles barley move at allabsolute zero[273 degrees]
- 13heat transfer involving particles that are free to movethe greater temperature difference the faster the flow of heat.
- 14the process of heat transfer by vibrating particlesthis is called conduction.
- 15what's the difference between heat and temperature?heat is the total energy of molecular motion in a substance while temperature is a measure of the average energy of molecular motion I a substance.
- 16how do thermometers work?thermometer measure temperature but do not measure the heat of a substance.
- 17What are conductors?A substance that allows heat to flow through it.
- 18particle model diagrams for a solid ,liquid and a gas.

- 19how is heat transfered?heat is transfered by convection in liquids and gases because there particles can move around.
- 20how does the sun transfer its heat energy?through a process called radiation.
