 Unit 1.4 Earth

Flashcards do conjunto (21)

  1. 1What is an axis? The imaginary line that connects the north pole to the south pole. What is an axis?
  2. 2In what direction does earth spin on its axis? The earth spins on its axis west to east.
  3. 3What is the equator? The Equator usually refers to an imaginary line on the Earth's surface equidistant from the North Pole and South Pole, dividing the Earth into the Northern Hemisphere and Southern Hemisphere. What is the equator?
  4. 4What is a day?The time it takes for the earth to spin once on its axis (24 hours). What is a day?
  5. 5What is revolution? One complete orbit around the sun. What is revolution?
  6. 6What is a year? The time taken by the earth to make one revolution around the sun. (365 days)
  7. 7What is a season? The passing of a year can bring a marked change in the weather and the surrounding environment. This is caused by the tilt of the earths axis.
  8. 8What are the 4 seasonsWhat are the 4 seasons
  9. 9Months prior to the seasons.Months prior to the seasons.
  10. 10What is a leap year? When a year is 365.25 and the quarter day makes setting up a calendar difficult so every 4 years the calendar needs to catch up so an extra day is added to make a leap years of 366 days.
  11. 11On what degree is the earth tilted on its axis?\[23.5\,^{\circ}\]
  12. 12How to work out leap year? How to work out leap year?
  13. 13How fast does the earth travel around the sun?108 000 km/h
  14. 14Why are the north and south poles the coldest parts of the earth? Both the Arctic (North Pole) and the Antarctic (South Pole) are cold because they don’t get any direct sunlight. The Sun is always low on the horizon, even in the middle of summer. In winter, the Sun is so far below the horizon that it doesn’t come up at all for months at a time. So the days are just like the nights—cold and dark.
  15. 15Why are the regions on the equator hotter? The equator is hotter than other areas of the earth, such as the poles, because it receives more direct sunlight than other areas. It is a common misconception that the equator is hotter due to it being closer to the sun than other areas of the earth.
  16. 16What is an equinox? When the duration of the day is equal to that of night. What is an equinox?
  17. 17What is a sundial?A sundial is a clock that uses the position of the Sun to indicate the time. What is a sundial?
  18. 18How does a sundial work?A sundial works by casting a shadow that is determined by the sun's position the sky.
  19. 19what is solstice?pecificwhat is solstice?
  20. 20What is a celestial equator?The projection into space of the earth's equator.What is a celestial equator?
  21. 21Since now we know what an equinox and solstice is here is a diagram of when it happenes during earths revolution.Since now we know what an equinox and solstice is here is a diagram of when it happenes during earths revolution.
