Welcome to our Modern History course 1980 to 2001 concentrating mainly on the post Cold War period. This course is part of a 3 part series addressing International Relations since World War 1. We look at the end of the Cold War and new developments post-Cold War focusing in the collapse of communism, the rise of terror movements such as Al-Qaeda and the consequences world wide.

Description

We begin our Course with a look at developments in the Cold War in the 1980's. The entrance of Gorbachov on the stage ushered in mass changes in Soviet Union and eventually led to the collapse of communism and the end of the cold war.

Description

Throughout the period of communism and the Iron Curtain there were protests and insurrections. This mind map charts the major protests in countries in Eastern Europe under communism and how the Soviet Union reacted.

Description

The Soviets helped other Eastern European countries remain communist during the cold war. However part of Gorbachev's policies was to withdraw Soviet troop support for other country regimes. Learn more in this short slide describing the impact.

Like a river breaking through a dam, once the cracks appeared in communism in Eastern Europe the end came pretty quickly. Within a year of the first major revolts, most communist regimes were removed from power. The chart outlines the rapid progression.
