Hurricanes - Distribution and Causes

• Typical names = hurricanes, typhoons and cyclones
• Force that causes the air in a tropical storm to spin = coriolis force
• Tropical forms in the tropics

Distribution:

• Hurricanes - occur over the Atlantic Ocean (off the west coast of Africa)
• Typoons - occur in the Pacific Ocean
• Cyclones - occur in the Indian Ocean
• Between the Tropic of Cancer and the Tropic of Capricorn (Tropics)

Causes (Conditions):

• Water that's 70 metres deep or more
• Water that's 26.5 degrees and above
• Between 5 and 20 degrees north and south of the equator
• Area's of low pressure
