LESSON 4:

CONDITIONAL SENTENCES.

The use of the conditional means that one action depends on another. Conditionals are used to talk about real or unreal situations. In general, conditional phrases carry the word "if"

Note that there is no verbal time for the conditional in English as it exists in Spanish.

Conditional Types

*ZERO CONDITIONAL: This type of conditional is used when the condition and result is always true.

*FIRST CONDITIONAL:

This type of use is used for the future and in cases where it is very likely that the condition will pass.

*SECOND CONDITIONAL: Type 2 is used to express an unreal possibility in the present, as a wish or a dream, or for an action in the not so probable future.

*THIRD CONDITIONAL:

We use the third type of conditional when we talk about a condition in the past that has not happened.

EX: If I don’t practice the piano everyday I play poorly. / I play the piano poorly if Idon’t practice everyday.

EX: Will you take the train if you miss the bus? If you miss the bus, will you takethe train?

EX: If I won the lottery, I would travel around the world. / I would travel around the world if I won the lottery.

EX: If I had known then what I know now, I would have done things differently. / Iwould have done things differently if I had known then what I know now.
